Who became the first Formula E drivers’ champion after the inaugural 2014–15 season?

The story behind the answer

Nelson Piquet Jr. became the first Formula E drivers’ champion after the inaugural 2014–15 season. He secured the title by finishing seventh in the final race in London.

The first Formula E season began in 2014 and featured electric single-seater cars competing on temporary street circuits. Piquet drove for China Racing and won two races during the campaign. His consistency in the championship finale allowed him to finish ahead of e.dams Renault driver Sébastien Buemi.

Formula E initially required drivers to change cars during races because the original cars could not complete a full event on one battery. That format was later replaced as battery capacity and race-car technology improved.

Piquet Jr. is the son of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet. His Formula E title was the first drivers’ championship awarded in the electric racing series.
