Alice was the wife of Ernest Hoschedé, a department-store owner and art collector who supported Monet for a time. After Ernest’s financial collapse, Alice and her children joined Monet, Camille’s sons, and other family members in a shared household.

Camille died in 1879, and Monet and Alice continued their relationship. They lived together for many years before marrying in 1892. Alice helped manage the large household and later supported the domestic life surrounding Monet’s work at Giverny.

The relationship is sometimes simplified as beginning only after Camille’s death, but Monet and Alice had already been closely connected through the combined household. Alice’s children included Blanche, who later married Monet’s son Jean and also painted.
