Who acquired Coca-Cola’s formula and business rights in 1888 before founding the company?
Answer
Asa Griggs Candler
Answer
Asa Griggs Candler
Asa Griggs Candler acquired Coca-Cola’s formula and business rights in 1888 before founding The Coca-Cola Company.
Candler was an Atlanta businessman and pharmacist who purchased interests in Coca-Cola from inventor John Stith Pemberton and others. He recognized that the drink’s future depended on aggressive distribution and advertising rather than remaining a local pharmacy product.
Under Candler’s leadership, Coca-Cola expanded through syrup sales, branded merchandise, newspaper advertising, and the development of bottling arrangements. He incorporated The Coca-Cola Company in 1892, turning the product into a formal business with a recognizable national brand.
Pemberton created the beverage in 1886, while Frank M. Robinson named it and designed its Spencerian script lettering. Those contributions are distinct from Candler’s role as the entrepreneur who acquired the rights and built the company. Ernest Woodruff acquired the company much later, in 1919.
