Which zoo animal is the largest living lizard, reaching about 3 metres in length?
Answer
Komodo dragon
Answer
Komodo dragon
The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard, reaching about 3 metres in length.
This monitor lizard is native to several Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca, Gili Montang, and parts of Flores. Large adults can weigh well over 50 kilograms, and exceptionally heavy individuals have been recorded. Its muscular body, long tail, sharp claws, and serrated teeth make it a powerful predator and scavenger.
The species was scientifically described in the early twentieth century after Western scientists learned of unusually large monitor lizards from the Indonesian islands. The Komodo dragon is venomous: glands in its lower jaw produce toxins that can contribute to bleeding and low blood pressure in prey. It is not a dinosaur, but it belongs to the modern reptile group Squamata, alongside snakes and other lizards.
