Which Zimbabwean area is known for its balancing rock formations and rhino sanctuaries?

The story behind the answer

The Zimbabwean area known for balancing rock formations and rhino sanctuaries is the Matobo Hills.

Located south of Bulawayo, the Matobo Hills are a granite landscape of rounded domes, kopjes, wooded valleys and enormous boulders. Weathering and erosion shaped the exposed granite over immense spans of time, producing formations such as the famous Mother and Child balancing rocks. The hills’ name is often linked to the idea of “bald heads,” referring to the bare granite domes.

The surrounding Matobo National Park contains a protected game area and intensive protection zones for both white and black rhinoceroses. The wider hills are much larger than the national park itself, so “Matobo Hills” is the appropriate geographic answer to the question.

The region is also culturally and archaeologically important. San rock art appears at thousands of sites, and the hills remain sacred to local communities, including through Mwari religious traditions. UNESCO designated the Matobo Hills a World Heritage Site in 2003.
