Which natural landmark in Botswana is the largest inland delta in the world?
Answer
Okavango Delta
Answer
Okavango Delta
The natural landmark in Botswana that is the largest inland delta in the world is the Okavango Delta.
Unlike most deltas, the Okavango does not empty into a sea or ocean. The Okavango River flows into the Kalahari Basin, where its water spreads across a low-lying tectonic trough and is eventually lost mainly through evaporation and plant transpiration. Seasonal floodwaters arrive during Botswana's dry winter, creating a remarkable contrast between abundant wildlife and surrounding desert.
The delta's channels, lagoons, floodplains and islands support elephants, hippos, lions, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. Chief's Island, the delta's largest island, was uplifted by a fault and provides important higher ground when flood levels rise. The wetland became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
A common mix-up is confusing the Okavango with the Niger, Nile or Zambezi deltas. Those are river deltas associated with coastal or lake systems, while the Okavango is an interior delta with no outlet to the ocean.
