Which WTO agreement eliminated tariffs on many information-technology products?

The story behind the answer

The WTO Information Technology Agreement eliminated tariffs on many information-technology products.

The agreement was concluded at the WTO’s first Ministerial Conference in Singapore in December 1996. Participants agreed to eliminate customs duties on a broad list of information-technology products, including computers, telecommunications equipment, semiconductors and software-related items.

Unlike most WTO agreements, the ITA is a plurilateral agreement: only participating members undertake its tariff commitments, although the resulting tariff treatment is generally extended on a most-favoured-nation basis. The original agreement took effect in 1997.

An expansion agreed in 2015 added many more products, including newer technologies such as certain medical equipment, video-game consoles and advanced communications products. The ITA is therefore not the same as the WTO agreement covering government procurement or trade in services.
