Which writing system did J.R.R. Tolkien devise for many Elvish languages?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien devised Tengwar as a writing system used for many Elvish languages.

Tengwar, also called the Fëanorian script, is an abugida-like script in Tolkien’s legendarium. Its letter shapes and modes can represent languages including Quenya and Sindarin, although the script is not itself a spoken language. Tolkien designed it as part of his broader work on the history and structure of Middle-earth’s languages.

Tengwar is often confused with Cirth, another writing system in Tolkien’s fiction. Cirth is based on runic-style angular characters and is associated especially with Dwarves, while Tengwar has a more flowing appearance. “Tengwar” is the plural of the Quenya word tengwa, meaning a sign or character.
