Which Wright brother piloted the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903?

The story behind the answer

Orville Wright piloted the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903.

The Wright brothers made four flights that day at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville flew the first one at 10:35 a.m. The Wright Flyer traveled 120 feet in 12 seconds, proving that a controlled, sustained, engine-powered heavier-than-air flight was possible.

Wilbur and Orville had developed a three-axis control system that let the pilot steer and maintain balance. They also used a small wind tunnel to collect aerodynamic data, giving them more reliable information about wing shapes and propellers than many earlier experimenters had possessed.

Wilbur made a three-second test flight on December 14, but it stalled after takeoff and the aircraft was damaged. The successful December 17 flights followed repairs. A strong gust later damaged the Flyer beyond further use, and Orville eventually helped restore it for museum display.
