Which Bible verse is inscribed on the Liberty Bell?

The story behind the answer

Leviticus 25:10 is the Bible verse inscribed on the Liberty Bell.

The inscription comes from the King James Version of Leviticus: “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof.” The words appear around the bell’s upper portion and connect the object with ideas of liberty and release.

The bell was cast in London in 1752 for the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall. It cracked during its early history and was recast twice in Philadelphia by John Pass and John Stow. The famous large crack was repaired and then extended during ringing in 1846, after which the bell was no longer rung.

The Liberty Bell became a national symbol during the nineteenth century, especially through abolitionist use of its liberty inscription. It did not ring out the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776; that popular story developed later and is unsupported by contemporary evidence.
