Konishiki became the first foreign-born ōzeki in professional sumo.
Born Saleva’a Atisanoe in Hawaii, Konishiki entered professional sumo in 1982 and joined Takasago stable. His large size and powerful pushing style helped him rise rapidly through the rankings. He reached ōzeki in 1987, becoming the first wrestler born outside Japan to attain that rank.
Konishiki later came close to promotion to yokozuna, but the Japan Sumo Association did not grant it. His case helped establish that foreign wrestlers could reach the sport’s highest competitive levels, although promotion standards remained demanding. Hawaiian wrestlers Akebono and Musashimaru later became yokozuna, while Kotoōshū became the first European-born ōzeki.
The term ōzeki means champion and is the second-highest rank. Unlike yokozuna, an ōzeki can be demoted after a sufficiently poor tournament record.
