In professional sumo, what is the lowest rank in the top division?
Answer
Maegashira
Answer
Maegashira
In professional sumo, maegashira is the lowest rank in the top division.
The top division is called makuuchi, and its wrestlers hold five ranks: yokozuna, ōzeki, sekiwake, komusubi, and maegashira. Unlike the four titled ranks above it, maegashira is a large group of wrestlers whose exact positions change from tournament to tournament.
Maegashira wrestlers are numbered from the highest position downward on the banzuke, the official ranking sheet. A wrestler might therefore be listed as Maegashira 1 East or Maegashira 10 West. East and West indicate placement on the ranking sheet rather than geographical teams.
A winning record in a tournament can move a maegashira upward, sometimes into the titled ranks. A losing record usually causes a downward move, although the number of available places and results elsewhere also affect the next ranking. Jūryō is the division immediately below makuuchi, not a rank within its top division.
