Which woman warrior fought for the Minamoto clan in the late-12th-century Genpei War?

The story behind the answer

Tomoe Gozen was a woman warrior who fought for the Minamoto clan in the late-12th-century Genpei War.

Tomoe appears in the medieval Japanese epic Tale of the Heike as a skilled archer and swordswoman serving Minamoto no Yoshinaka. The account describes her as exceptionally strong, courageous, and capable in battle. She is especially associated with the Battle of Awazu in 1184, where Yoshinaka’s forces were defeated by rival Minamoto troops.

The Tale of the Heike is a literary and historical source rather than a modern military record, so details about Tomoe’s life remain uncertain. Her exact fate after the Battle of Awazu is disputed in later traditions, and some stories say she became a nun or married another warrior.

Tomoe should not be confused with Hōjō Masako, a powerful political leader connected to the Kamakura shogunate, or Nakano Takeko, who fought much later during the Boshin War.
