Which 1615 siege destroyed the Toyotomi clan’s power in Japan?
Answer
Siege of Osaka
Answer
Siege of Osaka
The 1615 siege that destroyed the Toyotomi clan’s power was the Siege of Osaka.
Tokugawa Ieyasu attacked Osaka Castle, the stronghold of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s son Hideyori. The conflict had two phases: the Winter Campaign of 1614–1615 and the Summer Campaign of 1615. A temporary settlement reduced the castle’s defenses, but fighting resumed the following year.
Tokugawa forces captured Osaka Castle during the Summer Campaign. Toyotomi Hideyori and his mother, Yodo-dono, died there, ending the Toyotomi family’s political challenge to the Tokugawa shogunate.
The Siege of Osaka is sometimes treated as a single battle, but it was a campaign with multiple engagements. It also differs from the 1600 Battle of Sekigahara, which established Tokugawa dominance but did not yet eliminate the Toyotomi regime.
