Which woman completed the Golden Slam in singles in 1988?

The story behind the answer

Steffi Graf completed the Golden Slam in singles in 1988.

The German champion won all four major singles tournaments that year: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. She then added the Olympic women’s singles gold medal in Seoul, defeating Gabriela Sabatini 6–3, 6–3. That combination—every major plus Olympic gold in the same calendar year—is known as a Golden Slam.

Graf’s 1988 season was extraordinary across different surfaces. She won on hard court in Melbourne, clay in Paris, grass at Wimbledon, hard court again in New York, and then hard court at the Olympics. Her French Open final was especially dominant: she defeated Natasha Zvereva 6–0, 6–0 in one of the shortest major finals of the Open Era.

The achievement is often confused with a career Golden Slam, which means winning all four majors and Olympic singles gold at some point during a career. Graf’s 1988 feat was the calendar-year version. She also won a Wimbledon doubles title and an Olympic doubles bronze that year, but those were not part of the singles Golden Slam.
