Which wolf chases the sun in Norse myth?

The story behind the answer

Sköll is the wolf that chases the Sun in Norse myth.

In Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, Sköll pursues Sól, the personified Sun, as she travels through the sky in her chariot. The chase explains why the Sun must move swiftly: the wolf is always close behind and threatens to catch her.

Sköll is commonly paired with Hati Hróðvitnisson. Hati chases Máni, the personified Moon, so the two wolves pursue the main heavenly bodies. At Ragnarök, the wolves are prophesied to catch and devour their prey, although later tradition and modern retellings sometimes blur which wolf pursues which body.

Fenrir is a related figure and is identified in Snorri’s account as the father of Sköll and Hati. Garm is a monstrous guardian associated with Hel, not the solar chase. The distinction to remember is simple: Sköll follows the Sun; Hati follows the Moon.
