Which Norn represents the past?
Answer
Urðr
Answer
Urðr
Urðr is the Norn traditionally associated with the past in Norse myth.
The three famous Norns are Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld. Their names are conventionally interpreted as the past, present, and future: Urðr is what has happened, Verðandi what is happening, and Skuld what is yet due or owed. Together, they shape destinies and tend the world tree Yggdrasil.
Urðr’s name is related to the Old Norse idea of fate and is cognate with the English word “weird” through the Germanic concept of wyrd. She is also closely connected with Urðarbrunnr, the well beneath Yggdrasil where the Norns dwell.
The past-present-future division is a useful traditional shorthand, but scholars caution that the surviving Old Norse sources do not always present the Norns as a neat time system. Their names may express aspects of fate rather than strictly separate chronological roles.
