The Wii game that brought the Donkey Kong Country series back in 2010 was Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo, Donkey Kong Country Returns was designed as a revival of the side-scrolling Country formula. It brought back familiar elements such as barrel launching, mine-cart stages, collectible bananas, puzzle pieces, and the golden KONG letters, while adding new visual and gameplay ideas.

The revival was notable because the original Country developer, Rare, was no longer involved after Microsoft acquired the studio. Retro Studios was best known for Metroid Prime, so its appointment surprised some fans. Nintendo nevertheless viewed the team as capable of preserving the series’ platforming identity.

The game first launched in North America on November 21, 2010, followed by releases in Europe and Japan that December. It supported cooperative play, with one player controlling Donkey Kong and another controlling Diddy Kong. A Nintendo 3DS version followed in 2013, and the game later received additional ports.
