What maximum completion percentage can a Donkey Kong Country 2 save file show?

The story behind the answer

The maximum completion percentage a Donkey Kong Country 2 save file can show is 102%.

That unusual total comes from the way Rare designed the game's completion checklist. Players must finish every level and boss, complete all bonus challenges, collect every DK Coin, and visit each of the four members of the Kong family. Completing the main adventure alone does not reach the maximum.

The extra percentage reflects content beyond a straightforward trip through the eight standard worlds. The secret Lost World contains additional levels unlocked with Kremcoins, and the game rewards thorough exploration of hidden entrances, bonus areas and collectible locations. The four Kong family visits also count toward the final total, even though they are not conventional levels.

The number is often confused with 100% because many games stop there once the principal story is complete. In Donkey Kong Country 2, however, 100% is not the ceiling. The 102% figure is a deliberate completionist goal and became one of the game's best-known secrets, especially because the save-file percentage makes unfinished optional content visible.
