Which West Berlin landmark was famously wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1995?

The story behind the answer

The Reichstag was the West Berlin landmark wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1995.

The artists covered the historic parliament building with silver-blue polypropylene fabric and rope for two weeks in June 1995. The temporary artwork, called Wrapped Reichstag, attracted millions of visitors and became one of Berlin’s most memorable public art events after reunification.

The Reichstag had stood close to the Berlin Wall, but it was in West Berlin rather than East Berlin. The building’s location and history made it a powerful symbol of Germany’s division and later unity. After the artwork, architect Norman Foster redesigned the building, including its famous glass dome.

The Brandenburg Gate is another major Berlin landmark associated with the Wall, but it was not the building wrapped in 1995. The project was the result of decades of planning and required approval from Germany’s parliament.
