Which Berlin landmark stood directly beside the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate?
Answer
Brandenburg Gate
Answer
Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate stood directly beside the Berlin Wall in divided Berlin.
The neoclassical gate was completed in 1791 and became one of Berlin’s best-known landmarks. After the Wall was built in 1961, the gate stood inside the restricted border area on the East Berlin side, close to the barrier separating East and West Berlin.
For decades, the Wall and the closed gate symbolized Germany’s division. Ordinary Berliners could not pass through it, and access around the site was tightly controlled. The area became especially prominent during Cold War speeches and celebrations.
After the Wall opened in November 1989, the Brandenburg Gate became a major symbol of reunification. It was formally reopened to pedestrians on 22 December 1989, in a ceremony attended by Helmut Kohl and Hans Modrow.
