Which West Berlin checkpoint handled Allied military traffic through the Berlin Wall?

The story behind the answer

Checkpoint Charlie handled Allied military traffic through the Berlin Wall.

Located on Friedrichstraße at the boundary between the Soviet and American sectors, Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known crossing point between East and West Berlin. Its name came from the NATO phonetic alphabet: “Charlie” represents the letter C.

The checkpoint was intended for Allied military personnel, diplomats, and some foreign visitors rather than ordinary East German residents. In October 1961, American and Soviet tanks confronted one another there during a serious Berlin crisis. The standoff ended without fighting, but it demonstrated how easily the divided city could become the focus of a superpower confrontation.

The checkpoint booth and surrounding border structures were removed after the Wall opened. A replica now stands near the historic location, while the original guardhouse is preserved in the Allied Museum in Berlin.
