Which web browser is developed by Google?

The story behind the answer

Google Chrome is the web browser developed by Google. Google launched Chrome in 2008 as a new browser designed for speed, security, and the increasingly interactive web.

Chrome was built largely from Chromium, Google’s open-source browser project. Its original rendering engine was based on Apple’s WebKit, while its JavaScript engine, V8, was designed to make web applications such as Gmail run more efficiently. Google later developed Blink, a rendering engine forked from WebKit, for Chrome on most platforms.

The browser first launched for Microsoft Windows on September 2, 2008. Versions for macOS and Linux followed, and Chrome later became central to ChromeOS and Google’s broader software ecosystem. Its separate-process architecture also helped isolate tabs and improve stability when one page malfunctioned.

A common mix-up is Chromium. Chromium is the open-source project primarily maintained by Google, while Google Chrome is the branded browser built from Chromium with additional proprietary components and services. Microsoft Edge also uses Chromium, but it is developed by Microsoft.
