Which wearable-device company did Google acquire in 2021 for about $2.1 billion?

The story behind the answer

Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 for approximately $2.1 billion, adding the fitness-tracking company to its hardware business.

Fitbit was founded in 2007 by Eric Friedman and James Park. It became known for activity trackers and smartwatches that measured information such as steps, sleep and heart rate. The company went public in 2015, listing shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

Google announced the acquisition in November 2019, but the transaction closed on January 14, 2021, after regulatory review. Google said Fitbit data would not be used for Google advertising, addressing concerns about health information and competition in digital markets.

Fitbit continued operating as a recognizable product brand after the acquisition. Google later integrated Fitbit-related devices and services more closely with its Pixel hardware and health-focused product strategy.
