Which Hollywood studio did Amazon acquire in 2022 for approximately $8.45 billion?
Answer
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Answer
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Amazon acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, commonly known as MGM, in 2022 for approximately $8.45 billion.
Amazon announced the agreement in May 2021, and the acquisition closed on March 17, 2022. MGM brought Amazon a large library of films and television programs, including the James Bond franchise, although Bond remains subject to special arrangements involving Eon Productions and its rights holders.
MGM was founded in 1924 through the merger of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Its famous roaring-lion logo became one of Hollywood's best-known symbols. Before Amazon's purchase, MGM had undergone bankruptcy and ownership changes.
The acquisition did not mean Amazon bought every part of the entertainment industry. MGM's library and production operations joined Amazon Studios, later renamed Amazon MGM Studios, while some major franchises retained separate creative or ownership arrangements.
