Which Washington, D.C., memorial was dedicated in 2004 to honor Americans who served in World War II?

The story behind the answer

The World War II Memorial was dedicated in 2004 to honor Americans who served in World War II.

Located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, the memorial recognizes the 16 million Americans who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. It also commemorates the more than 400,000 Americans who died in the conflict and the millions who supported the war effort at home.

The memorial is organized around a large pool and plaza. Fifty-six pillars represent the U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia at the time of the war. Atlantic and Pacific arches represent the two major theaters of conflict.

President George W. Bush dedicated the memorial on May 29, 2004. It is distinct from the National World War I Memorial, which was dedicated later, in 2021.
