Which Voyager spacecraft was the first to reach Jupiter?
Answer
Voyager 1
Answer
Voyager 1
Voyager 1 was the first Voyager spacecraft to reach Jupiter.
Voyager 1 made its closest approach to Jupiter on March 5, 1979, after traveling outward from Earth for roughly 18 months. It returned detailed images and measurements of the giant planet and its moons, revealing active volcanoes on Io and helping scientists understand Jupiter’s complex atmosphere and magnetosphere.
Voyager 2 had launched earlier, in August 1977, but followed a longer trajectory and reached Jupiter later, in July 1979. Voyager 1’s faster path was intentional: NASA optimized it to reach Jupiter and Saturn quickly, while Voyager 2 was placed on a trajectory that could continue to Uranus and Neptune.
Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 reached Jupiter before either Voyager, which explains why they sometimes appear among the wrong options. However, among the two Voyager probes, Voyager 1 unquestionably arrived first.
