Which volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings contains the destruction of the One Ring?

The story behind the answer

The Return of the King contains the destruction of the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The third volume follows the final stages of the War of the Ring. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee reach Mount Doom, where the Ring was made, while Aragorn, Gandalf, and their allies confront Sauron’s forces elsewhere. The Ring is ultimately destroyed when Gollum falls into the volcanic fire while holding it.

The title refers primarily to Aragorn’s return as king, not to the Ring’s return. Tolkien’s three-volume structure was imposed by publishing and production considerations; he regarded the work as one continuous novel. The volume also includes the coronation of Aragorn, the marriage of Aragorn and Arwen, and the story’s appendices.
