Frodo Baggins must destroy the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
The One Ring was forged by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom during the Second Age. Sauron created it to control the other Rings of Power and extend his influence over their bearers. Its destruction requires returning it to the same volcanic fire in which it was made.
Bilbo Baggins finds the Ring before the events of The Lord of the Rings and later gives it to Frodo. The Council of Elrond decides that Frodo will carry it toward Mordor, supported first by the Fellowship and later by Samwise Gamgee.
The One Ring should not be confused with the three Elven Rings, the seven Dwarf-rings, or the nine Rings given to Men. Those rings are part of the wider Ring-making history, but the One Ring is Sauron’s controlling instrument and the object at the center of the quest.
