Aragorn is the heir of Isildur and the king of Gondor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
He first appears to the hobbits as Strider, a mysterious Ranger of the North. Aragorn is descended from Isildur, who cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand but failed to destroy it. This lineage gives Aragorn a hereditary claim to the thrones of Arnor and Gondor.
During the War of the Ring, Aragorn helps defend the Free Peoples, leads the army that confronts Sauron, and enters the Paths of the Dead to summon the oathbreakers. After Sauron’s defeat, he is crowned King Elessar and marries Arwen.
Boromir and Faramir are members of Gondor’s ruling family but are not the heir of Isildur. Éomer becomes king of Rohan, a different realm. Aragorn’s royal identity is gradually revealed rather than announced at his first appearance.
