Which volcano in Chad’s Tibesti Mountains is generally regarded as the highest peak in the Sahara?

The story behind the answer

The volcano generally regarded as the highest peak in the Sahara is Emi Koussi.

Emi Koussi is a large, dormant shield volcano in the Tibesti Mountains of northern Chad. Its summit reaches approximately 3,445 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in the Sahara and one of the most prominent mountains in the region.

The volcano has a broad summit area containing calderas and volcanic craters. Its great height means that the climate near the summit is considerably cooler than on the surrounding desert floor, even though the mountain stands in one of the world’s hottest arid regions.

Emi Koussi is sometimes confused with Mount Tahat, Algeria’s highest mountain, which is also in the Sahara. Tahat is lower. Emi Koussi’s combination of volcanic origin, elevation, and isolated location makes it a major landmark of the Tibesti massif.
