Which desert in Iran is also known as the Great Salt Desert?

The story behind the answer

Dasht-e Kavir is the Iranian desert also known as the Great Salt Desert.

Its name comes from Persian: dasht means plain or desert, while kavir refers to salt marshes or salt flats. The desert occupies a broad basin in central Iran, east and southeast of Tehran, and contains extensive salt flats, mud plains, and sandy areas.

The region is enclosed partly by mountain ranges, including the Alborz Mountains to the north. Limited rainfall, intense evaporation, and poor drainage allow salts to accumulate at the surface, producing the desert’s characteristic pale crusts.

Dasht-e Kavir is distinct from Dasht-e Lut, another major Iranian desert farther southeast. Dasht-e Lut is known for the Kaluts and extreme surface temperatures, while Dasht-e Kavir is especially associated with its salt-marsh landscapes.
