Which visual effects company hired Fincher in 1983?
Answer
Industrial Light & Magic
Answer
Industrial Light & Magic
Industrial Light & Magic hired David Fincher in 1983.
Fincher joined ILM as an assistant cameraman and matte photographer while the company was producing major effects-driven films for George Lucas and other filmmakers. He worked on Return of the Jedi, released in 1983, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, released in 1984. The job gave him practical experience with photography, compositing, miniature work, and visual-effects production.
Industrial Light & Magic was founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the effects for Star Wars. It became one of the most important visual-effects studios in cinema, developing techniques that combined physical models, optical compositing, motion-control photography, and later computer graphics.
Fincher’s time at ILM was an important bridge between his early interest in filmmaking and his later career as a director. He left the company in 1984 to direct a television commercial for the American Cancer Society featuring a fetus smoking a cigarette. That striking commercial attracted attention in Los Angeles and helped him move toward commercials, music videos, and eventually feature films. Rhythm & Hues, Digital Domain, and Weta Digital were not the company that hired him in 1983.
