What is the name of Michael Douglas's character in David Fincher's 1997 film The Game?

The story behind the answer

Michael Douglas’s character in David Fincher’s 1997 film The Game is Nicholas Van Orton.

Nicholas Van Orton is a wealthy and emotionally isolated San Francisco investment banker. On his 48th birthday, his younger brother Conrad gives him a voucher for an immersive “game” run by Consumer Recreation Services, or CRS.

What begins as an unusual birthday present soon invades Nicholas’s work, home, finances, and sense of reality. The film deliberately blurs the boundary between an elaborate entertainment and a genuine conspiracy, using Nicholas’s fear of losing control as its central dramatic engine.

The name is easy to confuse with characters from Fincher’s other films. Benjamin Button belongs to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Mills is Brad Pitt’s detective in Se7en, and Tyler Durden is Brad Pitt’s character in Fight Club. The Game instead centers on Douglas’s increasingly panicked Van Orton.
