Which visual effects company did George Lucas found?
Answer
Industrial Light & Magic
Answer
Industrial Light & Magic
The visual effects company George Lucas founded is Industrial Light & Magic, commonly abbreviated ILM.
Lucas created ILM on May 26, 1975, while preparing the original Star Wars film. The effects department at 20th Century Fox was no longer operating, so Lucas needed a new team capable of creating the film’s spacecraft, battles, creatures, and other visual illusions. The company began in a warehouse in Van Nuys, California, where John Dykstra assembled a team of artists, engineers, and filmmakers.
ILM helped make Star Wars’ space battles possible through detailed miniature photography, motion-control cameras, optical compositing, and inventive model work. It later became a major force in computer-generated imagery and visual effects, contributing to films such as Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and the Indiana Jones series.
DreamWorks, Pixar, and Weta Digital are separate companies. ILM became a division of Lucasfilm, and Disney acquired it in 2012 as part of its purchase of Lucasfilm. Its work now includes film, television, animation, and virtual-production technologies such as StageCraft.
