Which Van Gogh painting depicts a night sky over the Rhône river?

Starry Night Over the Rhône depicts a night sky above the Rhône River in Arles, France. Van Gogh painted it in September 1888 from a riverbank close to the Yellow House, where he was living and working.

The composition captures gaslights along the banks as shimmering reflections in the dark blue water. Two small figures walk in the foreground, while the town’s buildings and a bridge recede beneath a sky scattered with bright stars. The painting shows Van Gogh’s fascination with the challenge of working outdoors at night and with representing artificial light through color.

It is often confused with The Starry Night, painted at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy in June 1889. Café Terrace at Night, also painted in Arles in 1888, shows a café under a starry sky but no river. Starry Night Over the Rhône was first exhibited in Paris in 1889 and is now in the Musée d’Orsay.
