There are two authenticated painted versions of the portrait, which is the main source of possible confusion. The first version entered a private collection and famously sold at auction in 1990 for $82.5 million; its present whereabouts are not publicly established. The second version, formerly owned by Dr. Gachet, was bequeathed to France by his heirs and is the one displayed at the Musée d’Orsay.
