Which vaccine did the World Health Organization recommend for children against malaria in 2021?

The story behind the answer

The World Health Organization recommended RTS,S/AS01 for children against malaria in 2021.

In October 2021, the WHO recommended widespread use of RTS,S/AS01 among children living in regions with moderate to high transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The vaccine targets the circumsporozoite protein on the parasite’s sporozoite stage, which is transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

RTS,S/AS01 is also known by the brand name Mosquirix, but the scientific vaccine name is the more precise answer to this question. It does not provide complete protection, so mosquito nets, insecticide control, testing, and treatment remain important. The recommendation followed a pilot program in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi that began in 2019.
