Which Uzbek mosque in Samarkand was built by Timur and completed by his successors in 1404?
Answer
Bibi-Khanym Mosque
Answer
Bibi-Khanym Mosque
The Bibi-Khanym Mosque is the Uzbek mosque in Samarkand begun by Timur and completed by his successors in 1404.
Timur ordered the monumental mosque after his campaign in India, and construction took place around 1399–1404. It was intended to be one of the grandest buildings of his capital. The complex included a huge entrance portal, a large courtyard, a main domed sanctuary and minarets decorated with glazed tile.
The building’s scale created structural problems. Earthquakes and long-term deterioration caused major collapses, and much of what visitors see today resulted from extensive conservation and reconstruction during the Soviet period and afterward.
Bibi-Khanym is sometimes linked in popular stories to Timur’s wife, but its name and legends developed over time. Its secure historical importance lies in its Timurid patronage, monumental scale and role in Samarkand’s architectural landscape.
