Which brick minaret in Bukhara is known as the Kalyan Minaret?

The story behind the answer

The Minaret of Kalyan is the brick minaret in Bukhara known as the Kalyan Minaret.

The minaret was completed in 1127 under the Karakhanid ruler Arslan Khan. It rises beside the Kalyan Mosque in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, and became one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Its tall, tapering shaft is covered with bands of baked-brick ornament arranged in varied geometric patterns.

The structure served as a minaret and as a prominent visual marker for the religious centre of the city. Its design demonstrates how unglazed brick could provide both structural strength and intricate decoration. The minaret is sometimes called the Tower of Death because of a later legend, but that nickname should not be treated as its original architectural purpose.

The present Kalyan Mosque dates from the 16th century and is separate from the older minaret. The monument also differs from Delhi’s Qutb Minar and Afghanistan’s Minaret of Jam, which belong to other regions and historical periods.
