Which U.S. submarine is preserved as a museum at Pearl Harbor?

The story behind the answer

USS Bowfin is the U.S. submarine preserved as a museum at Pearl Harbor.

Bowfin was a Balao-class submarine commissioned in 1943 and completed nine war patrols in the Pacific during World War II. She is credited with sinking numerous Japanese vessels and received several battle stars for her wartime service.

The submarine was preserved and opened to visitors at Pearl Harbor in 1981. Today, guests can walk through much of the boat and see spaces such as the control room, torpedo rooms, crew berthing areas, and engine compartments. The surrounding museum explains submarine warfare and the Pacific campaign.

Bowfin is often confused with the USS Arizona Memorial nearby. Arizona is a battleship wreck and memorial, whereas Bowfin is a preserved submarine that visitors can enter. USS Missouri, another Pearl Harbor attraction, is also a battleship rather than a submarine.
