Japanese submarine I-58 sank the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis in July 1945.

I-58 attacked Indianapolis shortly after midnight on 15 July 1945, using torpedoes while operating in the Philippine Sea. The American cruiser was returning from delivering components of the atomic bomb to Tinian when the attack occurred.

Indianapolis sank rapidly, and many survivors remained in the water for days before being discovered. Of roughly 1,195 people aboard, about 救? 316 were eventually rescued, while hundreds died from injuries, exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks. The disaster became one of the most notorious American naval losses of the war.

I-58 was commanded by Mochitsura Hashimoto. The submarine also carried kaiten human torpedoes, but its attack on Indianapolis used conventional torpedoes. Confusing I-58 with I-400 is a common mistake: I-400 belonged to a large aircraft-carrying submarine class, while I-58 conducted this sinking.
