Which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe move to permanently in 1949?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
Georgia O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949.
She had first visited New Mexico in 1917 and began spending summers there in 1929. After her husband Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, O'Keeffe moved from New York to New Mexico three years later. The state's landscapes and buildings became central subjects in her mature work.
O'Keeffe lived first in Abiquiu and later maintained a home and studio in Ghost Ranch, a community near Abiquiu. She also spent time in Santa Fe, where she died in 1986. Her New Mexico paintings include desert hills, adobe walls, doors, crosses, and animal bones.
The state is sometimes conflated with Arizona or Texas because O'Keeffe's imagery is broadly identified with the American Southwest. Texas was important earlier in her life because she taught there, but it was not her permanent New Mexico home. Her move to New Mexico marked a major geographical and artistic change.
