Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's principal artistic landscape?

The story behind the answer

New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's principal artistic landscape.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned repeatedly during the 1920s. She was drawn to its intense light, desert forms, adobe architecture, cliffs, bones, flowers, and broad horizons. These subjects became central to her mature work.

She maintained a New York connection for many years but spent increasingly long periods in New Mexico. In 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died, she moved permanently to the state. Her homes and studios in Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch are now closely associated with her career, although she also painted important works based on New York skyscrapers and Lake George.
