Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's permanent home in 1949?

The story behind the answer

New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's permanent home in 1949.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned there repeatedly during the summers of the 1930s and 1940s. She was drawn to its stark cliffs, adobe buildings, bones, flowers, and expansive skies.

After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. She lived and worked at several places, including Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, and later spent her final years in Santa Fe.

The state's landscape became central to her mature work. Paintings such as Ram's Head, White Hollyhock-Hills and Pedernal reflect her habit of combining close observation with simplified, highly personal forms. O'Keeffe is sometimes described simply as a New Mexico painter, but she also produced important work in New York, Texas, Virginia, and Hawaii.
