Which U.S. state became Georgia O’Keeffe’s major artistic home after her first visit in 1917?

The story behind the answer

New Mexico became Georgia O’Keeffe’s major artistic home after her first visit there in 1917.

She first traveled to New Mexico in 1917 and returned regularly from 1929 onward. The state’s stark landscapes, adobe buildings, bones, flowers, and skies became central subjects in her mature work.

O’Keeffe lived in New Mexico for much of the later part of her life, maintaining homes in Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch. She moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz’s death. The region shaped both her imagery and her public identity.

New Mexico is sometimes confused with nearby states because O’Keeffe painted broadly recognizable Southwestern subjects. Her best-known sites, however, were specifically linked to northern New Mexico, including the area around Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch.
