Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's main home from 1949 onward?

The story behind the answer

New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's main home from 1949 onward.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly during the following years. The region's mountains, adobe buildings, desert forms, bones, and broad skies became central subjects in her work.

After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, O'Keeffe moved permanently from New York to New Mexico in 1949. She lived first in Abiquiú and also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, north of Santa Fe. These locations supplied the landscapes that defined much of her later career.

Texas was also important: O'Keeffe taught in the Texas Panhandle and painted there during the 1910s. Arizona and Colorado likewise have southwestern landscapes, but neither was her principal later home. O'Keeffe's connection with New Mexico was both personal and artistic, lasting until her death in Santa Fe in 1986.
