Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's lifelong artistic home?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's lifelong artistic home.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929, traveling there during the summer. She was captivated by the region's stark landscapes, adobe architecture, bones, flowers, and intense light, all of which became recurring subjects.
She spent many summers in New Mexico while still living in New York. In 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died, she moved there permanently. She lived mainly at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú, north of Santa Fe.
New Mexico is sometimes treated as merely a late-career setting, but it shaped a large and important part of O'Keeffe's work. Her paintings of the state helped establish the visual identity associated with her art, although she also painted in Texas, New York, and elsewhere.
