Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's best-known artistic home?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's best-known artistic home.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned repeatedly from the late 1920s onward. The state's stark landscapes, adobe buildings, bones, roads, and wide skies became enduring subjects in her paintings.
She spent part of each year in New Mexico while maintaining ties to New York. After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, she moved permanently to the state. She lived and worked in Abiquiú and later also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch.
New Mexico was not merely a backdrop in O'Keeffe's art. Its forms and light helped her develop a distinctive visual language based on close observation and simplified shapes. Her association with the state is so strong that she is often called an iconic painter of the American Southwest, although her work also includes New York skyscrapers, flowers, and other subjects.
