Which U.S. presidential medal did Georgia O'Keeffe receive in 1977?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. It is the highest civilian honor awarded by the president of the United States.

The award recognized O'Keeffe's exceptional contribution to American culture and visual art. By that time, her paintings of flowers, skyscrapers, bones, and desert landscapes had made her one of the most recognizable American modernists.

O'Keeffe later received another major national honor, the National Medal of Arts, in 1985. These two medals are therefore easy to mix up, but they were awarded in different years and by different official programs. The 1977 award was specifically the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
